A spiral down cut has blades which forces chips down back into your material. This has benefits of providing a perfect top finish to any wood type especially plys and top finishes. Made of a very high tungsten carbide material, down cut bits are the a weapon of choice in anyone's arsenal. Opposite to a spiral up cut, a down cut will give you a perfect top finish but a burred bottom finish if cutting all the way through. These bits therefore are most effective for engraving & lettering rather than cutting all the way through.
Suitable for
- Wood (MDF, hardwood, ply & softwoods)
Adam’s Tips
Just like a straight flute, a down cut creates a lot of dust as opposed to chips so make sure you have appropriate ventilation or dust extraction when cutting. On the plus side, the dust gets stuck and packed back into the slot you have made and keeps your cut item in place. This has the advantage of not having to use tabs or tape to hold your material down although can add time back in with the need to deburr the bottom edge.

2 flute down.
Cutting mfd. 12mm depth of pass. Make sure you ramp in rather than just plunge where possible. Definitely a go to bit.

Cutting Tas Oak with downcut bit
I used this to cut a shape out of 35mm thick Tas Oak. It seemed to work well although the tip has overheated a bit in the last pass. Perhaps I was expecting too much from the bit. It burnt the edge in the last 8-4mm and the end of the bit is a blue colour, I have no idea if this has overheated to the point of it being soft. I didn't want to have the feed rate too high and risk breaking it but perhaps I should have used an upcut bit instead? Next time I'll experiment more and try a different bit. Worked well enough for the job though and I was happy with the result.

6mm 2 flute down cut end mill
awesome bits , I get about 20 1200 x 2400 sheets of 19mm ply with 20 to 25 parts per sheet out of 1 bit before the cut becomes a bit furry. it still cuts fine after 20 sheets. they are the best I have used.
